Our Neuroemergent Story & Values

Our Story

Exploding with love, we offer our hearts to the world.

When Did You Know You Were "Different"?

Possibly all your life? Probably definitely right now?

We start this journey by listening to that still voice within that tells us we were born on the magical exploratory edge of the dreaming earth, an emergent evolutionary intelligence that needs diversification to thrive.

But it can be hard to hear when we've been conditioned to think there's something wrong with us.

We want to share in this story with you.

What Is It Like To Be "Normal"?

Nick is a seeker of whole-bodied experience. A human who values connection and community, who knows intimately what the opposite entails.

In sixth grade, Nick was put into a "special class" that forced them to identify with being different. And even though people constantly treated Nick like they were different, Nick always felt like they were the coolest person in the room.

Shortly after, Nick began to mask behind various forms of addictive patterning of falling asleep or disassociating into thoughts about other things or delving into substances to feel some sense of normalcy outside of the confines of what others deemed to be normal.

Nick's first actual encounter with autism was working in a severe behavior center where they focused on ABA therapy. The work was frustrating because it seemed like the work was being done to make other people comfortable, not actually learning to understand the person who it was for.

In running away from the weirdness of their beginnings, Nick ran to a place that was inherently weird. That place full of weirdos was called Asheville, and that's when our paths converged.

Lobsterbird grew up frolicking beneath the trees and by the sea. Always seen as “weird,” although no one could quite understand why.

What is Neuroemergence?

a new way of being in the world that co-creates a new world

Neurodiversity: “Neuro’ was a reference to the rise of neuroscience. ‘Diversity’ is a political term; it originated with the black American civil rights movement. ‘Biodiversity’ is really a political term, too. As a word, ‘neurodiversity’ describes the whole of humanity. But the neurodiversity movement is a political movement for people who want their human rights.”

~Judy Singer~

“Neurodivergent means having a mind that functions in ways which diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of normal.

~Dr. Nick Walker~

Emergence “leverages relatively simple interactions to create complex patterns, systems, and transformations, including adaptation, interdependence and decentralization, fractal awareness, resilience and transformative justice, non-linear and iterative change, and creating more possibilities.

~adrienne maree brown~

I've been looking for a word that describes what I am, rather than what I diverge from.

~Marta Rose~

Neuroemergent is an evolution of Neurodivergent.

We are using a new language to create a new culture—one where we are all free to be who we are in the fullness of our humanity.
